Is anyone still finding you on Google?

Not long ago, if you wanted to find a restaurant, a coach or a course, you typed a few words into Google and scrolled through the results.

Today, many of us just ask. We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or whatever AI tool is open on our phone, and we get one answer back. No scrolling, no clicking through ten websites.

When people change how they look for things, businesses have to change how they get found. It's the same pattern every time: customers move first, and the rest of us catch up.

That's why I signed up for a workshop on SEO, AEO and GEO. Three short terms, so let me keep them simple.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) helps your website show up when someone searches on Google. It's the one most of us already know.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is about giving clear, direct answers to the questions people actually ask, so search tools and AI assistants can pick up your content easily.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is about making your content easy for AI tools to understand and trust, so they mention you when they put an answer together.

Why does it matter? If AI tools don't know you exist, they can't recommend you. You may have years of experience and a great reputation, and still not appear in the answer.

Here's what I appreciated most from the session. Even with AI layered on top, the foundations of SEO still need to be strong. AI tools learn from what is already out there, so a clear, well-organised, regularly updated website matters just as much as before, maybe more.

There are tools that make this easier. Semrush and Ahrefs both show you which words people search for, how your website is performing, and how you compare with others in your space. Think of them as a health check for your website. If you want to keep learning, Neil Patel is a good person to follow. He explains digital marketing in plain language and shares a lot for free.

What made the workshop special was that it was hands-on. We didn't just sit and listen. I got to try the tools myself, which made everything click much faster. The programme was run by Equinet Academy and led by trainer Edwin Lau, who was engaging from start to finish. If you run a business, coach, consult or teach, I'd recommend it.

So why did I go? I'm an adjunct lecturer at a university, and my students will soon enter a workplace where these skills are expected. I can't prepare them for a world I haven't taken the time to understand myself. Staying current is part of the job.

I enjoy learning. The harder part is finding time to apply it once the workshop is over and the inbox is full again. So I'm taking it one step at a time. I'm working on my website, tightening my SEO, and making sure my bios and messaging say the same thing wherever people find me. The aim is simple: when someone asks an AI tool who can help leaders build trust in their teams, I'd like my name to have a fair chance of coming up.

Learning is the fun part. Applying it is where the real work begins. What's one thing you've learned lately that you still haven't put into practice?

If you are looking to upskill and stay relevant, check out Equinet Academy's courses. They have 70+ programmes across 10 disciplines and many of them are WSQ funded.
